Copyright

Copyright is a form of protection on a type of property. This includes designs, music, videos, books etc. There are laws in which the original creator of the work has the rights of the use of the work created. If others copy, distribute or modify the work then this frauds the legal use of the copyright law unless permitted by the creator to do so.
A person can obtain clearance from which an agreement is made with the original copyright owner to use their work in a way that is agreed. Clearance from music for example for a TV company want to use a soundtrack, they would have to obtain clearance from the artist of that sound piece.

My personal view on copyright is that it should only be viewed as infringing if your deliberately taking someone else's creation and try to label it as yours. I feel if its for non marketing reasons e.g. youtube then it should be okay, the law is very inconsistent in which peoples videos on youtube get taken down for infringing copyright but the majority don't, its annoying when videos get taken down cause of some footage what isn't yours or music what isn't yours but its only a fun video which won't disturb the creators economy at all.

Promoting the show + A mention in the BN1 magazine!!!!

A while ago I had a meeting with the press release woman about getting the show in the press. I have had a check and in the BN1 magazine, dots per inch show has an article in there.

In the description I get a personal mention about my work experience with latest TV which is so great!

'Students include Glen, who completed work experience at Latest TV, helping to design the opening titles to Andrew Kay’s cookery show, The International Chef Exchange. Dots Per Inch features a combination of modern, sleek graphics and more classic art styles. Students hope to enter the digital media workplace, with interests ranging from filmmaking and trailers to graphic design and music videos.'

Its really good to get a shoutout for self promotion.

The show is also on the sussex downs website, in which my shout out is on there too, wahoo.

Work submitted for the show

The work I wanted most for print was my YCN animal fur textured posters. So I put all 4 of them in an A1 spread.

My second choice for print was book cover from the first year.

The two movs i submitted are my speeches trailer and the promo for my alcohol app.

Curriculum vitae

For my CV I wanted to design something considerably nice, so I looked up some existing designers CV's for some inspiration and came across these:

I looked through many more on pinterest http://gb.pinterest.com/jsgore/design-designers-resumes/
and came across lots and lots of nice looking layouts. A lot of the CV's had an 'Objective' section in which contains a personal objective in life. So I wanted to use this in mine. I also saw a lot of sections where people would rate their skills in certain software, normally out of 5. I thought this looked cool and would be useful for employees as they can clearly see how good with the software you are by putting how good you think you are with it out of 5.

Creating my CV I wanted to keep a similar style to my business card so I would have a consistent theme and art style... so I used the black background with the light floral pattern on it again, with a smart looking font.

I spent a good amount of time making it look professional, and having appropriate content. Overall I'm quite please with how its come out as. I used the basic title font for my name and the rest of the text is a font called 'Lane'. I think it matches my business card quite nicely too.

Business card

Before I  created my business card I wanted to look at what other designers have for their business card as inspiration. I found a lot of very nice ones off google images. A lot of them had nice colourful and playful designs and a lot were slick, clean, proffesional designs. I want to go for a professional looking design with an art style similar to what I design when I created graphics.

I have created my business card:

I wanted to have a professional and classy theme. Thus why I used black and white, a simplistic layout with simplistic elements to it. I used the font 'Basic title font' for the text on the front. I used this because it obviously looks slick and professional, I like how fine it is, It stands out a lot and is easy to read. I created the lines and the stars to add some dynamics to the look, Ive come across the lines and stars before when I have created graphics for team logos for competitive gamers. I got a picture of a floral background and embedded it into the background, lowering the opacity so it wasn't too interruptive with the text in front of it.

For the back design, I only wanted simply my contact details nothing else. Simplicity the key to it. I grabbed all the social media logos off google images and colour corrected them to white to keep my consistent theme. I looked at lots of professional fonts and decided to use the font 'TFPiron'

Portfolio | Website

I have created my portfolio website on Tumblr, I found it was a good idea to have it on here because it is a popular site used by many people. Its got a very wide range of tools to customise which you can even do with code. I wanted to have a slick and clean tiled website, keeping simple and professional. This is how my website looks so far.

Contribution to the show - Tweeting

I have been doing tweets for the twitter page including promoting students work and general tweets promoting the show. Here are some evidence of some of the tweets I have done.

Contribution evidence - Social media

As I am a part of the social media team, I have created designs for the Facebook and Twitter page; this consists of banners and a background. Here is what I created firstly for the Facebook page:

This was the first one I made which was on the Facebook page for a few weeks, the black background had multi-coloured spots on it. The font on this I real led like, it looked playful. (DK Sleepy time).

I made the name of the event and dates the only content on it so people can clearly see immediately the most important details of the event, instead of looking for it.

I then made one that had all our names on it, this promotes our name obviously. Dates and location are small this time at the bottom.

This one I just created a low opacity black dotted background with all our names in multi coloured names in a playful font again. The branding at this point was still not sure so I didn't have any guidelines in terms of branding style, so i just kept it simple and playful as I know Jess' branding looked playful already.

I created a twitter version of this Facebook banner and it took me ages to get the size measurements right as there isn't anywhere that has an accurate size dimensions cause there is a brand new twitter layout design where the banner is much bigger than normal.

I made a twitter background as well, I played around in photoshop using new brushes I was downloading off www.brusheezy.com

I managed to come up with this:

It again has the low opacity dots in the background with multi coloured particles brushed over,
our names along the side which is visible on the twitter page.

Branding - Creating a poster for the show.

First of all over easter break we had to come with with individual branding for the show and create a poster so this is what I came up with.

The show is called dots per inch, so I thought obviously dots should be the theme, so I made them the complete focal point of the poster, I created a background of low opacity grey dots and created a mask and made the word DPI out of the dots but in the bright red colour. I used a fun simplistic, playful font for the text on the poster. I wanted to have a simple dots theme. I see a lot of simple clean themes for posters nowadays and I think its really effective thing to do. Making the dates big and having the social feed in a lot of space creates readability.

Meeting with the Press Release

At lunch time today, Me, Gina and Liam met up with Zara Baker who works for the press release to talk about getting our show out in the news. It was a very helpful experience, Zara basically asked "When, where, who" so she could get some details face to face to get a more in depth conversation for details.

We told her the dates of the show, where the show was and who we are aiming to come to the show. And she told us she will try and get us in every possible local newspaper she can. And also said she will try get flyers out in Brighton which would be extremely helpful. She said she will try and get a photographer down to the show for post news stuff. So hopefully this means nice photos of all of us and our work with a nice amount of people there with a good review of the show if everything goes well, this would be very good for getting a good name so potential employers in the future can see and gives a good prep for when we have show again next year when all of us are BA students.

Zara got our social media details for the twitter and Facebook page and her social media team will follow it and promote it through their sussex downs twitter and facebook page which is very helpful too.

Crazily, Zara had worked for Latest TV, she asked if we had worked for any companies, so we said yeah Latest TV was one of our live clients and she said she had worked there for 8 years. She asked me what I had done and I said I worked with a guy called Andrew Kay and created a tv sequence for the food show and she said she had seen one of my first mock ups as she worked with him. Which is just such a weird coincidence...

End of year show preparation

So for our last brief of the year, we as a class have to work together to organise the final year show which presents some of work in a museum manner. I will be working mainly as part of the social media team, which means concentrating on the Facebook and Twitter page. Then creating personal business cards/postcards to promote my contact. I also have to create a website/show reel/brochure which showcases my work on this course, I will probably use Tumblr to do this as it is a nice and easy way to showcase in a visually organised design.

Evaluation

To conclude this project, I think it was good to be working with a real client to get a sense of the real world but I really didn't like my brief at all which is a shame. What I got asked to do wasn't exciting at all, I didn't have a lot of choice what I could do so I had to ask my client to change the brief a bit so I could actually do something a bit more exciting and dynamic. The logo I got given was horrendous, but I guess it was good that my brief could have the chance to use a camera and 3D space, which I wanted to do for the first time.

If I had to rate my clients communication rating out of 10 I would give him a solid 7. At the start of the project I got no communication for about a week which I was very annoying, but it wasn't his fault as he was filming in Amsterdam. After the week after hounding him and another member from latest TV I finally got communication, frequent communication.  He would reply to me within 5 minutes a lot of the time giving me live feedback so that was really good. He gave me very, very nice feedback about what I had done for him as the final product which is relieving and very satisfying.

I enjoyed creating my graphics, for the first time I used a graphics tablet to digital paint my illustrations. It was really fun doing this and it is something I want to do more of. Creating the animation was alright, it is just a shame how a bit limited it was.

If I could do things again differently I would probably redesign the egg logo just so I could have a final product that has much better designed work in so it doesn't look like that is my work. I use to create loads of logos before this degree so it is something I would very much enjoy to do anyway.

Evidence of communication | Final feedback!

So this is the last of the communication with Andrew for this project. As the e-mail shows, Andrew is really pleased with it and has invited me to a launch screening which is really good, and even is asking me how I would like to be credited at the end of the programme!

Feedback | Crit

So from showing my work to the class, I got one bit of feedback what could potentially improve my work. That was adding a shadow of the graphics orbiting around the egg. Im not sure if I want to do this because the graphics are travelling over the egg to reveal elements of the logo. If there is a shadow swell just below it, the revealing will look distracted, not as focused. And besides my client really loves what I have done how it is so I think I am going to leave it as it is.

Project logging | Motion Graphic Development

Refining the Egg + 3D

I masked the egg to get a much smoother egg, the egg I got given had a horrible shadow underneath it, I wanted a shadow on the floor so it gives the 'earth egg' a more realistic look as if it was floating in space. I put a camera on it and put everything 3D which enables me to orbit my graphics around it.

To get the graphics orbiting round the egg I had to parent them to a null object and change the values on the axis in 3D space so it goes round in a circle, I used easy ease in and easy ease out so the graphics go a bit slower when going behind, to make it a bit more realistic.

To reveal the lines I used the linear wipe effect, and i key framed it so it obviously matched when the graphics were travelling over.

To get the word 'exchange' to follow the plane like a banner I simple copied the null object of the plane and parented the text to it then i created a clipping mask so it could only come in from the area in the clipping mask.

For the smoke coming out the train, it was made from the particular effect, in which i manipulated to look like realistic stem coming out the chimney bit.

All graphics have a fast blur on them when going round the corners to look more realistic again. The text that says Chef, is blurred whilst having smoke on top of it which then reveals to clean text.

Project logging | Graphic development

 Train

I made the graphics by drawing over a image and tweaking it a little bit of a real toy, using the pen tool in illustrator.

I used a black stoke to make it stand out more, as the graphics are small its important to make them as clear as possible. I shaded in each section of the train manually, changing the opacity of a blurred round brush and gently shading around to make it look more visually nice.

I used the same process for all three graphics.

Evidence of communication | Putting the continents on the egg

I received the egg with continents on which Andrew done himself. To be honest its not the best bit of photoshop work but as well as the red text on top, its content they want so even though i don't like it I have to deal with it. I really think the red colour, font choice and positioning of the text is awful. The continent work isn't brilliantly done either.

I have finished the last proposals Andrew wanted and have given him the file on dropbox. Here is evidence of our dropbox folder.

I am just waiting for Andrew to view so he can e-mail thoughts.

Evidence of communication | Changing the background feedback

I changed the background of white to the gradient blue and it seemed perfect to his proposal. I asked whether he wanted anything else, I explained that 40 seconds is way too much time for what he wanted.

Personally I really don't like it, I feel the white background is much better. It brings the egg out more, and creates more focus to the egg. But obviously you have to design to the clients liking.

This obviously shows Andrew was happy with the background change. And is happy to have space at the end so he can put some stuff in it himself.

There was problems with him receiving the egg files. So I gave them to him on dropbox.

Evidence of communication | Animation feedback

I emailed my first completed draft of my animation and I showed Andrew this via dropbox. Here is the log of e-mails which gives me feedback too.

So once again very positive feedback. Surprisingly, he said he is sad he cannot see the continents that were on the original egg. When there wasn't any continents on there in the first place. I used the exact logo he sent me. Other than that, he wanted me to change the white background to a blue gradated blue.

I confronted Andrew about not receiving any egg with continents on, he replies asking me to send him the egg plain cause he wants to put the missing content on it. He seemed very happy with the work though which is pleasing. 'And i really do love it, i think you have done a brilliant job'.
